The Only Way to Find the Right Oven

We created this guide very strategically so that you can see the main differences in each Breville oven CLEAR AS DAY....

But for you to know how to follow this guide, you need to understand how we created it.

Firstly, we started our list off with the biggest ovens that have the most features.

As you make your way down the list, each comparison will feature the higher-end oven, compared with it's slightly cheaper alternative.

Secondly, every time you see RED FONT, this implies an inferior feature to the competing oven.

Thirdly, GREEN FONT implies a neutral difference between models that will depend on your personal preference (like external dimensions).

Approximate price differences will be at the bottom of each comparison checklist.

We tried to make this as simple as possible, but we understand there are always improvements to be made. If you struggled to find the information you need or had a tough time making a decision, please leave a comment at the bottom and help us improve this guide.

Comparisons start from the biggest models and work their way down.

  • Price: Approximately $400

Conclusion: The 950BSS has almost exactly the same capabilities as the 900BSS, with one big difference - the app. Though Breville called the 900BSS “the Smart Oven”, the 950BSS is where they really cut loose with smart appliance features. You can control it through the Joule Oven App, which includes:

  • Voice commands

  • An Autopilot program that lets you set and forget a multi-phase cook plan

  • Downloadable video-guided recipes and tips

  • Remote cook time monitoring and notifications

There are two drawbacks. First, the 950BSS costs $100-$150 more. Second, it has a slightly smaller capacity. The 900BSS boasted a full cubic foot of space, enough to fit a covered 5-qt Dutch Oven. The 950BSS is back to the 0.8-foot capacity of older Breville models like the 860BSS.

If you love the smart features, the 950BSS is the clear winner. If you don’t think you’ll use the app much, then stick with the roomer, less expensive 900BSS.

  • Price: Approximately $350

Conclusion: Both the 900BSS and the 860BSS are Breville's top of the line countertop ovens. If you want the most cook options with the largest interior, these would be the two ovens to consider.

The 900BSS will give you a larger interior of 1 cu ft compared to the 0.8 cu ft of the 860BSS. Thus, the 900BS can uniquely fit 9 slices of toast, a 5 quart dutch oven and a 9x13" bake pan, whereas the 860 BSS can can only fit 6 slices of bread and may struggle to fit a dutch oven or a 9x13" pan. The 900BSS will also give you proof and dehydrate functions

The 860BSS may give you a smaller interior (and exterior) but it offers more color options. It will also run you about $50 less than the 900BSS. And while it may not offer proof or dehydrating functions, it still offers air fry and a two step convection function.

-The 860BSS offers air fry

-The 860BSS offers a 2 year warranty

-The 860BSS has more color options

-The 860BSS has 6 quartz heating elements where the 845BSS only has 5

-The 845BSS has an internal light

-The 845BSS has a "Slow Cook" function (for low temp, long roasts)

-The 845BSS has a smaller exterior (1.7 Cubic ft compared to 2.15 Cubic ft)

The 800XL lacks all of these qualities and it sells for approximately $10-20 less.

-The 800XL has a "Warm" function and the 670BSS does not

-The 800XL has a 6-slice capacity, the 670BSS has a 4-slice capacity

-The 800XL has 5 quartz heating elements, the 670BSS only has 4

This makes the 800XL approximately $70 more than the BOV670.

Conclusion: The 670BSS and the 650XL have very similar external dimensions and both have a 4-slice internal capacity. They do, however, have one large difference.

The 670BSS has a convection function, the 650XL does not.

This makes the 670BSS approximately $10 more than the BOV670. Most would call this a small price to pay for an extra convection function.

This makes the 650XL $30 more than the BOV450.

Most Common Complaint of Breville Ovens

After researching Breville ovens very thoroughly, the most common complaint from buyers was the longevity of the units. Unfortunately, Breville ovens are notorious for giving-out just after the warranty period.

This is NOT the case for all customers...

but something worth mentioning for all of you on the fence. The Wolf countertop oven is of similar quality, but has the advantage of a longer warranty period.

  1. You include some specs & details that Breville's own website does not include or omits. This is helpful.
For example, Breville's site does not specify the number of elements for every model. It also omits the interior dimensions for ALL models. ☹️ #$%^
However, I wish to respectfully point out that your dimensions for the BOV860 and BOV845 are both incorrect, or at least do not match those on Breville website.

  2. Michael, thank you for the comparison of the variety of models Breville offers. One specification I was hoping for is weight. It is important to many .

    1. Hey Eileen,

I really appreciate this comment. Been getting a lot of notes for improvement lately and WE LOVE IT!

Will let our editor know. We should have the weights up within the week.

      Cheers!

      Michael

  3. For the 950 (Joule) vs 900 version you have internal volume being different for some reason even though you have the external dimension being exactly the same. They are the same oven, just with the Wifi & joule control capability for the 950. There aren't any physical differences concerning volume.

    1. Hey Paul,

Huge thanks for catching that. Not exactly sure how that slipped through the cracks but it did. Both units now reflect the same internal capacity of 1 cu ft.

      Have a wonderful day 🙂

      Michael

    1. Hey Liza,

Appreciate the kind words 🙂 Breville has so many toaster ovens it can be difficult to know the right balance between simplicity and overkill. Glad the article helped.

If you have any recommendations based on your experience researching, please let us know!

      Thanks,

      Michael

  4. I like your reviews, especially those (like this one) which make direct side by side comparisons between models. Seeing 2 at a time, then scrolling to the next tranche is nicely clever – it captures the way many people actually choose between items ! The only comment I'd have regarding these particular types of countertop ovens, particularly the higher end brands: manufacturers often "name" certain functions to help people know what they're getting, However, this same method is sometimes misleading, if not incorrect. Example: one of them might have convection, yet is given a "no" for not having "air fryer". Wrong. As fun as it is to get more gadgets and displays that show off all the things your device "can" do, it's also true that virtually ANY oven which has a convection (fan) CAN air fry anything. A simple little rack to lift the food above the pan does it!

So, IMO reviewers maybe should be a bit less beholden to marketing, and more helpful to people who want to understand what they can get for the money and what they can do with what they get !

    1. Hey Suzan,

      Appreciate the kind words 🙂

In regards to your comment about the overlap between different functions, I do agree. There are some ovens that will separate functions for both “air fry” and “convection” even though there is no mechanism that changes when activating each function. There are some ovens, however, that have an “air fry” setting that just kicks on a higher fan rpm. In this case, I’m ok with separating the functions.

We actually created an article that helps distinguish an air fryer from a toaster oven (we squeeze countertop convection ovens in there as well).

      https://robustkitchen.com/air-fryer-vs-toaster-oven/

I’ll talk to some of my colleagues about creating a section that helps differentiate the two prior to the review section of this article.

Thanks again for reaching out. Love the feedback!

      Cheers,

      Michael

    1. Appreciate the kind words Susan. There are so many models it’s difficult to figure out what you need without a side by side comparison.

      Happy Black Friday 🙂
