Top 3 Compared
Built-in Vs. Freestanding Fridge
The biggest difference between the two is that built-in refrigerators are designed to function properly in tight spaces. Strict, freestanding refrigerators need a certain area around them to ensure proper heat dissipation.
Built-in fridges will usually have a vent in the front to ensure optimal heat dissipation in tight spaces (although these can also be used as freestanding).
Freestanding fridges are not required to have front vents and usually require clearance on all sides so heat can escape effectively.

Best Under Counter Refrigerators
1) Kalamera 24" Stainless Steel Beverage Cooler - Soda and Beer Refrigerator
This Kalamera 24" (23.4" exact width) refrigerator features everything we look for in a quality undercounter fridge.
1) Convenient size (for most under counter situations)
A 24" width just happens to be the most common space available for undercounter situations. People continually spoke on how well it fit their space.
2) Optimal internal capacity
With a 154 can capacity, you can keep your bar stocked for the entire season. The 4 separate racks allow you to use every inch of space for beverage storage. If you decide you need more space for larger items, the racks are removable for ultimate versatility.
3) Optimal cooling capacity (32-41°F)
Customers continually talked about the fridge's ability to reach and maintain lower temperatures (apparently better than their prior refrigerators). Having a temp range between 32°- 41°F allows you to keep things near freezing without worrying about overworking the unit (unlike most solar fridges).
With over 100 Amazon ratings, this model has sustained a 4.5 / 5 star review (as of 12/18/2020). People were most happy with how well it maintained temperature and how quiet it was. Some people had trouble with installation and others complained that the handle loosened after several months.

2) Kalamera 24" Beverage Refrigerator Built-in or Freestanding Single Zone Touch Control
Practically identical to the Kalamera 24" fridge above with the exception of one special feature...
That sleek clear glass door!
If you plan on using this fridge for beverages, there's nothing quite flashier than a see-through fridge. It's also convenient for taking inventory without opening the door.
The blue internal light really brings the whole futuristic look together and is a crowd pleaser when you have company over.
While glass doesn't keep the cold in as well as other materials, the remainder of the fridge is well-insulated and stainless steel. This helps to give you the best of both worlds...a sleek look with effective functionality
Like the Kalamera above, this model features 4 racks (not including the floor rack), 154 can capacity, and a low noise compressor.
Unlike the model above, the temperature range is slightly higher at 38-50°F. This higher temp range is likely due to no insulation on the front of the door. The tradeoff may or may not suit your needs.
With over 450 Amazon ratings this model has sustained a 4.2 / 5 star review (as of 11/18/2020). People repeatedly commented on the attractive look of the glass door with the blue internal light. There were a couple complaints about the unit not having a lower temperature range (38-50°F).

Weight: 104.5 pounds
Temp Range: 38-50°F

3) Avallon AFR151SSLH 3.3 Cu Ft Built-In 15" Refrigerator - Left Hinge
Not all of us have a whopping two feet to work with. For those with tight space constraints, a 15" undercounter fridge might just be the perfect fit.
While small, the powerful, fan-forced compressor-based cooling allows this fridge to maintain its wide temperature range of 34° to 50°F. The door, door handle, and bottom vent are all stainless steel with a sleek, polished appearance.
It also gives you the option to alternate between white and blue internal lights to change things up every so often. The light and temperature controls can be seen right when you open the door at the very top.
With 3.3 cubic feet, this unit offers plenty of room for any reasonable beverage- cooling needs. With 3 sanded glass shelves and 3 door shelves, this fridge uses every inch of space to provide ample storage.
Just keep in mind, there were some complaints about wine bottles not fitting in the bottom door shelf. While this option has the door handle on the right side, there is an identical model (affiliate link) with a left-sided handle.
With just 7 Amazon ratings, this model has sustained a 4.8 / 5 star review (as of 11/18/2020). People repeatedly spoke on the quiet operation and the sleek look. There were a few complaints about longevity coming from the left-handled option.

4) Phiestina 15" Beverage Cooler Refrigerator - 96 Can Built-in or Free Standing Beverage Fridge with Glass Door
With its sleek, snug and saavy design, the Phiestina 15" built-in refrigerator attracts all nearby spectators. The clear glass door and the reflective blue LED (which you can turn off), makes it hard to miss.
This refrigerator also offers 5 separate racks (not including the floor rack) which means you can optimize it for any sized items you need to put in it. Stocking it with beers for a party? Place all 5 racks in their designated spots and lay the middle beers on their side.
This will allow you to fit a total of 96 cans!
A surprisingly high number of cans for such a small fridge. If you need a little more space for wine or other tall items, take the two middle racks out and use the full depth of the fridge. The beauty of this model is that you can use it for whatever you happen to need at the time.
The control unit is placed on the inside of the fridge directly at the top. It displays the present temperature of the fridge in Celsius or Fahrenheit (whichever you prefer) and has a set temperature range of 38°-50°F which takes care of most daily cooling needs.

There were a few complaints about the unit only lasting a few years. One customer recommended unplugging the fridge and letting it defrost to allow blocked passages to become clear again.

5) Summit AL54 ADA Height 24" Built-In Undercounter Refrigerator with Glass Shelves and Door Storage
Very similar in style to the Kalamera above, with a few important distinctions. For one, this model is about an inch shorter (32" instead of 33.1"). This may help the fridge fit better in your particular space.
The Summit fridge also has a black interior with glass shelves which helps it blend into darker spaces seamlessly. Take a look at Amazon's internal pictures. They reveal how much this fridge's layout resembles a regular household fridge, with the obvious exception of its smaller size.
This quality makes the fridge perfect for those who are looking for more of a secondary fridge, not a beverage fridge.
It also has some unique added features like a front door lock, high temperature alarms and a sabbath mode. Again, features that are usually equipped on higher end kitchen fridges.
With 3 Amazon ratings, this model has sustained a 4.7 / 5 star rating (as of 11/23/2020). While the ratings are high, more reviews will need to be evaluated to speak more on the pros and cons of this model.

One very appealing quality for you wine drinkers out there is the ridged bottom that fits 6 wine bottles perfectly. You can also secure any other large bottles here for convenient storage. The door is reversible which helps you make it as ergonomic as possible.

7) 5.49 Cu. Ft. EdgeStar 142 Can Stainless Steel Beverage Cooler - Black and Stainless Steel
The ever-so-slightly larger variant of the EdgeStar above, this fridge maintains most of the benefits shown above. That is, with the exception of the stainless steel door instead of clear glass.
If you're contemplating which EdgeStar to get, there are really only three things you should know. This fridge is slightly bigger (while actually holding 6 less cans), has a stainless steel door (as opposed to glass), and is more expensive.
Everything else is pretty much the same. That means this fridge has a reversible handle (meaning you can adjust it to the left or right side of the fridge), a digital temperature control display at the top face of the unit, and an internal blue LED light.
Keep in mind, the company recommends a 2" clearance in the back for proper heat dissipation.

8) Smith & Hanks BEV145SRE 178 Can Capacity Beverage Cooler
Doesn't Smith and Hank's sound like a quaint, family owned small business? Well, that's exactly what they are. As their website puts it, "Casey Smith loves wine and Jason Hanks loves beer," so they sought out to create refrigerators that would accommodate both seamlessly.
With a whopping 178 can capacity, there's really no use in going any other direction for larger parties (or large families). The installation is as simple as placing it in the space and plugging it in.
Set it and forget it 🙂
This fridge also has a huge temperature range (36°-68°F) allowing it to store both cold beer and warmer wine. There are also 7 rack positions to choose from so you can optimize the space for your particular needs.

10) Kalamera 24'' Wine Cooler Refrigerator 46 Bottle Dual Zone Built-in or Freestanding Fridge
On the off chance that you found this page and realized you're really looking for the right under counter wine fridge, the Kalamera 24" wine cooler would be our first place of interest.
A 46 bottle capacity should fit the bill for any ordinary households wine storage needs. The loading capacity was measured using the standard 750mL bourdeaux bottles with a bottom diameter of 2.75".
The unit has two separate sections that have their own temperature setting so you can separate the rosés and Chardonnays from the reds. The upper zone has a temperature range of 40-50°F and the lower 50-66°F.
The control panel placed at the inside top-face has two temperature displays that make changing the temperature of each section as simple as pressing the up and down keys to your liking. There were also a few complaints about the displayed temperatures not being completely accurate.

Consider Before You Buy
The first and most obvious variable to consider is size. Get it wrong and you'll find yourself going through the very annoying process of returning a large package.
The two base widths for under counter fridges are 15" and 24".
24" is your typical dishwasher width and this size makes a potential switch extremely convenient.
15" is for those who are more limited on space, or in the process of replacing a mini dishwasher in a smaller kitchen or bar.
Make sure to take a look at the dimensions for each fridge. Having at least a half inch on every side will make a world of difference in the installation process.
It's important to consider what you'll be storing in the fridge. If you plan on using the fridge as a beverage cooler, all the models above reach temperatures of at least 38°F. This is an optimal cooling temperature for beer, soda and most of your everyday household items.
If, however, you require things to get a little colder, some models above get to temperatures as low as freezing. These units will offer more versatility and a longer shelf life when chilling at colder temperatures.
Stainless Steel or Glass Door?
There's generally two options for an under counter freezer door; Stainless steel or glass. There are advantages and disadvantages to each.
- Usually better insulation in the door (therefore a lower temperature range)
- Easier to clean the outside
- Cannot take inventory without opening the door
- Take inventory with the door closed
- Most offer an internal light that illuminates beverages and offers a sleek look
- Poor door insulation
One of the most important steps of installing an under counter refrigerator is...
putting your pride away and reading those dang instructions.
While in some applications, installation is as easy as placing the fridge underneath the counter and plugging it in, most require a little more preparation.
Some things to consider:
1) Let the unit sit upright for 24 hours before plugging in. This is to ensure the compressor oil drains back into the compressor and stays out of your refrigerant lines.
2) After 24 hours of upright placement, plug the fridge in to make sure it works properly (nothing worse than going through the whole installation to find that the fridge is defective).
3) Place the fridge on the same ground where it will be residing. Place a level on the inside shelves to ensure the unit is as level as possible. Adjust the legs as needed.
4) Take the proper measurements to make sure all sides have ample clearance and abide by the instruction parameters. If there is too much clearance at the top, you may be able to adjust the legs up on all sides to offer a better fit.
5) Install the fridge door stopper (if equipped) after installation so the fridge door doesn't accidentally damage nearby cabinets.
Here are some helpful videos to give you an idea of what the installation entails:
Extra space for cooling is a no brainer in a growing house. An under counter fridge is the easiest way to add cooling space without taking up precious room in your kitchen.
