Pellet Vs Nugget Vs Sonic Vs Pebble Ice

nugget-ice

Yes, the fast food chain Sonic refers to their chewable ice as Sonic Ice and other companies prefer to call it pellet ice, pebble ice, or nugget ice.

The truth is -- they all mean the exact same thing.

Pebble, pellet, nugget, or sonic, it doesn’t make a difference. Sure, sometimes features like size, texture, and chewability can differ by company (and this is an important variable to consider) - but at the end of the day, it’s all ice ice baby 🙂

The important thing to determine is what type of ice you're looking for, so you can choose the right pellet ice maker for your particular needs.

To make this process a little less painful, we've put all the most critical information about each model all on the same article.

The vast majority of reviewers loved the style of the machine, the quantity of ice it produces, and most importantly the quality of pellet ice that it makes.

Paired with the Opal App, you can start making pellet ice on-demand at the click of a button; it only takes around 20 minutes for the maker to start popping out tasty pellet ice.

However, there are a few conflicting 1 star reviews that complained about the machine occasionally being noisy, or that their pellet ice maker stopped working.

Product Overview

With nearly 1,500 reviews on GE’s website, this pellet ice maker has a solid 4.6 star rating (as of 09/15/2021).

Reviewers were mostly impressed with overall design improvements like better LED touch panel controls, rounded corners, and built-in voice and WiFi controls.

While this machine has overwhelmingly positive reviews - the one star feedback was mainly attributed to the lack of any real warranty, and their machines failing before the first year was up (however, this is a very small percentage of reviews).

3) KBIce Self Dispensing Pellet Ice Maker

knice-pellet-ice-maker

Our rating:

4.2 / 5 Stars

Storage Capacity: 2 lbs
Daily Ice Production: 30 lbs. per day

  • Awesome customer service
  • Simple, easy to use design

Cons

  • Slightly loud

Product Overview

This pellet ice maker is one of the more unique machines on this list. KBIce’s pellet ice maker is self-dispensing, which means less stress and less mess.

This pellet ice maker has been reviewed on Amazon over 300 times and maintains a 4.3 star rating.

Reviewers seem to really appreciate not having to use a scoop to get the pellet ice into their cup.

They also loved the ease of use, “just press one button and the most perfect good ice drops right into my glass,” - Amazon reviewer.

Despite the great rating and reviews, this pellet ice maker has a few issues to note. Some reviewers claimed that it was slightly loud at times, and the machine would occasionally dispense ice when not being used.

4) Taotronics Pellet Ice Maker (With Water Hookup)

taotronics pellet ice maker

Our rating:

3.8 / 5 Stars

Storage Capacity: 3.3 lbs
Daily Ice Production: 26 lbs. per day
Warranty: 1 year limited
Dimensions: 40.5 lbs. 9.5” width x 16.7” height x 16.7” depth

Pros

  • Simple to set up and use
  • Optional water line
  • Fast ice production
  • Sleek design

Cons

  • Can be loud at times throughout the day
  • Has to be kept upright for 24 hours before initial use
  • Not a lot of reviews
  • Pricier than it’s RaySonics twin

Product Overview

Taotronics might not be a household name, but their pellet ice maker puts up a strong fight against their competitors. This ice maker comes with a very valuable, and possibly deal-making feature - the option to connect a water line. While other machines make you refill them manually, Taotronics added the optional connection to simplify the experience.

That being said, this machine does come with a few drawbacks. It isn’t the quietest machine on the market, but it doesn’t run constantly. Also, there aren’t a lot of reviews to go off. Those flaws definitely don’t make or break the deal, but they’re worth noting.

5) GE Built-in UnderCounter Pellet Ice Maker

GE-Builtin-Pellet-Ice-Maker

Our rating:

4.3 / 5 Stars

Storage Capacity: 26 lbs
Daily Ice Production: 56 lbs. per day
Warranty: 1 year parts - 5 year refrigeration system
Dimensions: 112 lbs. 14.88” width x 33.88” height x 22.75” depth

Pros

  • Produces a ton of ice per day
  • Quiet
  • Easy to set up and use
  • Indoor & outdoor capabilities

Cons

  • Doesn't come with the door panel
  • Expensive
  • Not Energy Star certified
  • No drain pipe included

Product Overview

GE's undercounter machine is one of the best-rated built-in under-counter pellet ice makers for sale today. This machine is capable of being built-in under your counter or freestanding; it can even be set up for use outside.

As impressive as this machine is, reviews good and bad alike all seem to have the same problem - this pellet ice maker doesn’t come with the door panel. You’ll have to purchase a separate finished door panel to complete the look. For a pellet ice maker that already has a large price tag, having to purchase extras can be a turnoff.

All of that being said, based on the 100+ positive reviews, we can safely say that this is one of the best under-counter pellet ice makers on the market.

6) KitchenAid FreeStanding/Built-In Nugget Ice Maker

kitchenaid-undercounter-nugget-ice-maker

Cons

  • Rare issues with mold in back of the machine

Product Overview

Delicious pellet ice in large quantities shouldn’t be exclusively for restaurants; which is why KitchenAid came out with their own pellet ice maker.

You can use this appliance built-in under your counter, or it can be used as a free-standing ice maker inside and outside.

While the majority of the 150+ reviews on Lowes’ website are positive, a few reviewers commented that they had an issue with mold building up inside the back of the unit.

Overall, people appreciate how quietly this machine produces amazing pellet ice. Especially considering the price point being much lower than some of its competitors.

scotsman-nugget-ice-maker

Our rating:

4.2 / 5 Stars

Pros

  • Great storage capacity for the size
  • Energy Star approved
  • Air-cooled
  • Great pellet ice

Cons

  • Warranty not clear and upfront
  • Very few reviews
  • No included drain pump
  • Uglier design, built for commercial use

Product Overview

Scotsman was the original pellet ice maker company, dating back to 1981. This ice maker is light on extras and concentrates more on making perfect, tasty pellet ice. The design is simple, it’s made to be functional and easy to use.

Scotsman has more available options that vary in size and design. Their pellet ice makers range from 15 inches wide with a capacity to produce 79 lbs. in one day - to 24 inches wide with a 340 lbs. capacity.

Needless to say, you have more than one way to get your pellet ice from Scotsman. However, there is one big warning we need to share: Amazon and Scotsman both list the warranty on this machine at 3 years - but that’s only when this machine is installed commercially, not residentially. Basically, if you buy any of these Scotsman pellet ice makers for home use, you’re only getting a 1 year limited parts and labor warranty.

8) Scotsman UnderCounter Pellet Ice Maker

scotsman-undercounter-pellet-ice-maker

Our rating:

3.5 / 5 Stars

Storage Capacity: 26 lbs

  • 80 lbs. of ice per day
  • Large 26 lbs. Storage bin
  • More attractive stainless steel design

Cons

  • Low average customer reviews
  • Loud at times
  • Warranty and customer service complaints

Product Overview

This is one of the more controversial pellet ice makers we have on this list. Out of the 66 reviews on Amazon, over half are positive. Those reviews mostly focus on the quality and quantity of tasty pellet ice that gets produced. They also appreciate the ease of use and simple installation.

The negative reviewers concentrate on the many issues they experience either within the warranty period or out of it. Repair costs can be quite costly, and the warranty isn’t very comprehensive. They also didn’t like how loud the pellet ice maker can be at times. Check out our full overview of all Scotsman Nugget Ice Makers.

9) Ice-O-Matic UnderCounter Pellet Ice Maker

ice-o-matic-pellet-ice maker

Our rating:

4.2 / 5 Stars

Storage Capacity: 22 lbs
Daily Ice Production: 86 lbs. per day

Cons

  • Expensive and tough to repair
  • Warranty isn't comprehensive

Product Overview

The best pellet ice makers give you options, capacity, and quality - and that’s exactly what Ice-O-Matic’s pellet ice maker does. This machine has the ability to be used built-in under the counter indoors or free-standing outdoors.

Reviewers are more than happy with the speed, quality, and quantity of pellet ice that this appliance produces. They said it was quick to produce their ideal Sonic style, pellet ice. The stainless steel design lends itself well to its residential nature.

What few negative reviews are available are concentrated on their particular machines needing costly repairs that were either outside of the warranty period, or it didn’t help them at all.

10) Frigidaire Pellet Ice Maker

frigidaire-nugget-ice-maker

Our rating:

3.8 / 5 Stars

Storage Capacity: 3 lbs
Daily Ice Production: 44 lbs. per day
Warranty: 1 year limited
Dimensions: 19 lbs. 9.8” width x 19” height x 16” depth

Pros

  • Easy setup
  • Great quality ice
  • Lower price point

Cons

  • Poor design necessitates either tilt or extra drip pan
  • Smaller unit
  • Prone to mineral buildup

Product Overview

Most countertop pellet ice makers cost $500 or more; Frigidaire boasts this quality ice maker for over $100 less. If price isn’t your first question, then you might like to know that the majority of reviewers say their appliance made delicious pellet ice.

The negative reviewers complained that the machine had a tendency to be noisy and high-maintenance. This particular pellet ice maker, according to reviewers, is prone to mineral buildup, and more than a few pointed out that the machine seems to leak unless slightly tilted back.

While those seem like more cons than pros, don’t get it twisted - for the price, quality, and the number of positive reviews - we can feel good about recommending this pellet ice maker.

11) RaySonics Pellet Ice Maker

raysonics-nuggetg-ice-makers

Our rating:

4.1 / 5 Stars

Storage Capacity: 3.3 lbs
Daily Ice Production: 26 lbs. per day
Warranty: 1-year limited warranty
Dimensions: 40 lbs. 10” width x 17” height x 17” depth

Pros

  • Affordable
  • High quality pellet ice
  • Waterline capable
  • Sleek design

Cons

  • Ice bin isn't well insulated
  • Bulky machine
  • Customer service complaints
  •  Slow to produce ice

Product Overview

Most pellet ice makers have the same problem - no waterline connection capability. Raysonics Pellet Ice Maker and Taotronics Pellet Ice Maker (above) are the only two countertop pellet ice makers on this list with the option to connect a waterline.

That’s not where the similarities end though. The two ice makers are very nearly the same design. That isn’t a flaw, rather, it’s a great opportunity to pick up a similar machine with more reviews at a lower price.

The biggest complaint that reviewers have is that the machine’s warranty and RaySonic’s customer service aren’t up to par. Aside from those issues, this pellet ice maker has over 100 reviews and maintains a 4.5 star rating on Amazon.

12) Manitowoc Pellet Ice Maker with Water Dispenser

manitowok-pellet-ice-maker

Our rating:

4.1 / 5 Stars

Storage Capacity: 10 lbs
Daily Ice Production: 315 lbs. per da
Warranty: 2 year parts and labor - 5 year compressor
Dimensions: 260 lbs. 16.25” width x 35” height x 24” depth

Pros

  • High quality pellet ice
  • Manitowoc has a great reputation
  • Makes up to 315 lbs. per day
  • Longer warranty than most

Cons

  • Small 10 lbs storage bin
  • Very limited reviews
  • Big price tag

Product Overview

Coming in as one of the most expensive pellet ice makers on our list, this multi-functional pellet ice maker has some great qualities. It comes packed with both a pellet ice maker and a water dispenser; along with a touch panel for either just ice, just water, or both ice and water.

While there aren’t many reviews online, what few there are available are overwhelmingly positive. In fact, all ten reviews on Amazon are 5 stars. They are pleased with the speed, quality, and shipping.

There isn’t a wealth of information available from verified buyers, but something we saw while researching this machine was that the water may come out at room temperature.

13) J122 Nugget Ice Maker

AICOOK-nugget-ice-maker

Our rating:

4 / 5 Stars

Storage Capacity: 5.3 lbs
Daily Ice Production: 26 lbs. per day
Warranty: 1-year limited warranty
Dimensions: 37 lbs. 9.5” width x 16.7” height x 16” depth

Pros

  • Easy to use self cleaning mechanism
  • Midrange pricing
  • Tasty pellet ice
  • Uses melted ice to make more ice

Cons

  • Few reviews make it harder to rate
  • Slow to make ice
  • Glossy finish requires constant upkeep

Product Overview

J122 isn’t a name that many people know, but they have produced a pellet ice maker with a lot of potential. While there aren’t many reviews on their pellet ice maker, the few that we can find are quite helpful.

This ice maker is quiet and makes very tasty pellet ice; however, it’s slow to get the ball rolling. Furthermore, you’ll have to get rid of the first batch to filter out any chemical residue or factory dust inside - meaning you’ll be waiting a while to get that first batch of ice.

On the bright side, J122’s pellet ice maker is smaller, lighter, and therefore more portable than some of the other heavier ice makers on this list.

Consider Before You Buy

Do You Have the Space?

GE-Opal-Nugget-Ice-Maker

When considering which pellet ice maker to purchase, one of the first questions you should be answering is, “where do I have space?”

Ice pellet machines come in various shapes, sizes, and options. These can range from built-in under the counter units, to outdoor free-standing units, and especially smaller countertop makers.

Countertop pellet ice makers are usually designed to fit well under the national average 25 inch countertop size, however, you should measure before assuming.

Also, (possibly) more importantly, you need to make sure you have the clearance to fit the ice maker underneath any overhead cabinets you may have. The tallest countertop ice maker on this list is Manitowoc’s ice maker and water dispenser; at 35 inches with the legs, it towers over all of the other countertop pellet ice makers (the next highest is 19 inches).

Built-in or freestanding units are a bit less complicated. You either have the ability to have it built-in under your counter, or you can use it as a freestanding unit; either indoors or outdoors. The sizes range from 38 inches in height at the tallest, with most being just about 33 inches. They also range in weight anywhere from 130 lbs to 108 lbs.

How Much Ice Storage Do You Need?

ice scooper full of nugget ice

The pellet ice makers on this list are put into two different categories. The first being either built-in or freestanding, and the second being a countertop pellet ice maker. Depending on size, price, and availability, you might find yourself choosing based on how much ice can fit in the ice storage bin at a time.

Depending on each person’s unique usage and needs, most reviewers are generally satisfied with 3 lbs or more in the ice bin at any one time. However, the pellet ice makers on this list range from 2 lbs capacity to 36 lbs capacity.

If you’re the hot spot for family gatherings or maybe you serve all the drinks during the block party, 2 lbs of tasty pellet ice just won’t cut it. That’s not to say that you need 36 lbs, that’s a bit excessive by most residential reviewer’s standards. 3 lbs seems to be a more than adequate amount since most of the ice bins aren’t refrigerated and some ice will most likely melt before it’s used.

Also, keep in mind that you can always bag the ice when it’s done being made and store it in the freezer for future use. It’s also helpful to mention - as painful as it may be - you should always toss the first batch of pellet ice down the drain. Usually, the first batch will get chemical residue and factory dust in it. The first batch generally cleans that out and makes the next batch tasty and chewable.

How Much Daily Pellet Ice Do You Need?

two-glasses-full-of-pellet-ice

This is an interesting question that doesn’t actually have a precise answer. It all depends on how many people you plan to have use your pellet ice maker on any given day.

If you have a small family, or it’s just you, then the sky's the limit. Daily pellet ice production quantities can vary from 24 lbs to 315 lbs of ice per day.

If you’re only buying a pellet ice maker for your family, then 24 lbs is perfect. If you’re entertaining guests, or even buying a machine to put in an office, it might be helpful to consider going with a machine that makes at least 50 lbs of ice per day.

Do You Need a Water Filter?

water-splashing

Let’s get something straight - you should purchase a water filter regardless of what you might think. Depending on your location you might have hard or soft tap water. Even if you think your local tap water is soft, having a water filter prevents long-term damage and reduces mineral build-up over time. Make your pellet ice maker last longer and get a water filter.

Is There a Solid Warranty Promise?

The majority of complaints that we have seen on nearly every single pellet ice maker is that the warranty doesn’t live up to expectations. The warranties will vary by company, but most of the countertop pellet ice makers come with the bare minimum single year limited parts and labor coverage. The built-in or freestanding units do usually have longer, more comprehensive coverage.

While we understand that “things happen,” the best thing you can do for yourself is invest in an extended warranty when possible - and make sure you stay on top of cleaning, descaling, and following regular maintenance found in the owner’s manual.

How is the Customer Service?

five-stars-with-pointing-finger

For the most part, each company’s customer service is pretty middle of the road. GE is no exception and even being the most reviewed pellet ice maker on this list - they have some problems when it comes to customer service. The majority of their negative reviews seem to stem from a lack of action being taken when things turn sour for their customers.

On the opposite end, KBIce’s reviews for their self-dispensing pellet ice maker point toward their customer service being friendly, helpful, and overall easy to deal with.

You can easily check this by going to the reviews section of any selling website. Type in “customer service” into the search bar and it will show you all reviews related to customer service.

In Conclusion

Overall, you have so many options to choose from to settle that craving for daily pellet ice. Countertop ice makers, undercounter ice makers, freestanding ice makers - it’s all about the quality of that pellet, pebble, Sonic, nugget, or whatever you want to call it, ice.

We hope you found this list helpful, insightful, and comprehensive.

Cheers,
