GE Profile Opal Nugget Ice Maker
- True Nugget Ice
- Designed for home use
- Automatically refills ice storage as it melts
- No water hookup required
- Tends to give out just past warranty (but, they do have the 5 year protection plan)
- Must refill water chamber by hand when empty
This ice maker has been on my wish list since it came out, and well, let me tell you, it has been a godsend. It makes wonderfully crunchy, great-for-eating Sonic-sized ice nuggets. The more you use, the more it makes. No trouble keeping up with four adults who go through a ton of ice a day.

Our 2 Cents...
This machine is a great choice for anyone who is seriously picky about their ice, and whose biggest concern is the quality of the nuggets. If you don’t mind a little noise (and an admittedly short lifespan), the GE Profile Nugget Ice Maker cranks out consistently top-notch quality nugget ice in quantities that will keep even the biggest ice addicts happily crunching away.
What We Liked
1) True Nugget Ice
Texture is everything when it comes to nugget ice. Quality nuggets should be soft and fluffy, without being melty or slushy. Striking this delicate balance isn’t easy, but this machine compacts ice flakes into the perfect size and shape. The result is chewable, snowball-like ice that’s soft enough that it won’t hurt your teeth, but hard enough to retain its satisfying crunch.
The GE Opal Ice Maker is also ideal for adding an extra element of indulgence to everything from soda to craft cocktails. Since the ice is perfectly compacted, it stays frozen and won’t dilute your favorite drink. But, it’s also small enough to evenly disperse throughout your beverage and keep things chilly.
Users were unanimously happy with the quality of the GE Profile’s ice, even if they had qualms about other aspects of the machine. Many noted that the quality of the nuggets met or exceeded that of popular chains like Sonic, and that it put an end to them purchasing bags of nugget ice from the drive-thru. Reviewers also raved about how their guests, co-workers, and family members were equally blown away by the quality of this soft-yet-crunchy frozen treat.
2) Portable Home Design
No matter how much you love ice, the truth is you probably don’t need (or have the space for) an industrial-sized machine. If you’re operating out of a home kitchen rather than a commercial one, choosing a machine that’s compact is crucial.
Thankfully, the GE Opal Ice Maker's specs come in at an impressive 17.5 x 13.43 x 16.5 inches. To put it into perspective, that’s about the size of a large microwave. It’s made from sleek stainless steel that will blend right in with any kitchen aesthetic.
Since the GE Opal Nugget Ice Maker doesn’t require a water connection, it’s extremely countertop-friendly. If there’s an outlet nearby, you’re in business—you can even take it to the porch or to your poolside cabana (should you be so lucky).
Reviewers seemed to have no problems with the machine’s portability or overall look and feel. Users also reported installing the GE Profile Nugget Ice Maker everywhere from their garages, to their kitchens, to their home bars. One comment did mention that the machine is heavy (weighing in at 47 pounds), so may want to enlist the help of a strong friend to help you get it initially set up—you can always thank them with an icy-cold drink!
3) Automatic/Smart Refills
If you’re considering purchasing this product, it’s helpful to have a basic grasp on the mechanics so you can understand how it works. Basically, this machine is an ice maker, but it’s not a portable freezer. It cranks out pellet ice which will then start to melt at room temperature. This might sound like a downside, but it’s actually not a problem since the water from the melted ice is automatically collected and then used to make fresh, crunchy nuggets.
Once the ice is made, you can also take it out of the machine and store it in the freezer if you’re looking to stock up for a party or if a heatwave is on the horizon. Just keep in mind that if you stick the nuggets in the freezer, they will become harder and lose some of their delicious chewy texture. Don’t forget—since the Opal Ice Maker is recycling water, you’ll need to clean and descale it regularly to prevent mold. This is especially true if you live in an area with hard water, in which case a filter is highly recommended.
Some reviewers loved the automatic refill function of GE Ice Maker and raved about how quickly the ice bin filled up. Even reviews that came from entire families of ice-chewers were satisfied with the quantity of nugget ice. However, many users had trouble getting the machine to function consistently, and also reported problems such as blinking error lights.
What We Didn't Like
1) Noise Level
If you’re sensitive to noise and don’t have a place to put this ice machine that’s out of the way (like a garage), this might not be the best option for you. This ice maker does make noise while it produces ice, and there’s no way to avoid some additional sound. This is an entirely personal preference, and what bothers one person might not phase another.
Reviews were very mixed on this issue, describing the noise as everything from a “gurgle” to a “hum” to a “high-pitched squealing sound." One reviewer even went as far as to say it sounded like the machine was “possessed by demons." At the end of the day, the best thing to do is consider your lifestyle and personal preferences before you buy.
As with any large purchase, you should think carefully about the longevity of this product, and the warranty options available. Nugget ice makers are relatively new to the market, and the technology is still in its infancy, which means all models are more prone to problems than other tried-and-true pieces of equipment. That being said, this machine is still one of the better options available. There’s a standard one-year warranty available, as well as an additional five-year protection plan.
You may want to keep in mind the fact that many users complained about the GE Opal Nugget Ice Maker breaking shortly after the one-year warranty ended, and as a result opt for the more robust protection plan. A short lifespan was a common complaint across the board, so if you decide to buy, you are somewhat rolling the dice.
3) Built-in Bluetooth
The GE Profile Nugget Ice Maker features Bluetooth capability that allows you to schedule ice production right from the GE App. You can also check your Opal ice maker’s status, so you’ll never have to wonder if there will be crisp, crunchy ice waiting for you when you walk into the kitchen. If you need to order accessories or replacement parts for your machine, the app can take care of that, too.
Though these features are a great idea in theory, there are a significant number of reviews that complain about them in practice. Reviewers cite connectivity issues, difficulty getting it set up, and vague instructions as problems they encountered in the Bluetooth arena. If scheduling ice is important to you, there are other models like the GE Profile Opal 2.0 that may work better for your needs since it’s Wi-Fi compatible.
