Filet vs Carving Knife

It's imperative you know the difference so you can find a knife that will perform your tasks most effectively.

Filet Knife

Flexible serrated blade with a
pointed tip

Carving Knife

Stiffer serrated blade with a
duller tip (usually)

Filet Knives are fantastic for cuts that involve a lot of precision and not a lot of torque. They rely heavily on a sharp, yet bendable blade for meticulous cutting. Filet knives are most effective with smaller fish or other sea critters.

Carving Knives are best suited for making large cuts into dense muscle meat. They are able to pull this off with thicker, less flexible blades. This is ideal for carving into turkeys, chickens and any red meat.

Best Electric Filet Knives

1) BUBBA 110V Electric Fillet Knife with 4 Ti-Nitride S.S. Coated Non-Stick Reciprocating Blades

Let's start with the 110V Bubba. You won't know if you should store this electric knife in the kitchen or the shed — this is a power tool.

The non-slip handle is a beauty and will keep you safe. The dual rivet TiN (Titanium Nitride) blade, which is non-stick coated, by the way, will cut through a brick (not really, but it's pretty dang tough). Of course, you might want to stick with a few freshly caught bass 🙂

The blades are easily removed and even easier to clean. The serrated knife has a gorgeous shape, designed to carve and slice with great precision, even around a turkey's slippery bones.

The Bubba comes with 7" and 12" blades, a wall charger, and a premium zippered case, meaning you can take this bad boy everywhere with ease. This is a winning electric knife for the looks alone but wait until you try it; it’s awesome.

Our rating:

4.5 / 5 Stars

Pros

  • Fantastic blades
  • Goes through fish "like butter"
  • "Works great and very durable"

Cons

  • Several complaints of gears giving out over time
  • Complaints about struggles with warranty

2) Bubba Li-Ion Cordless Electric Fillet Knife with 4 Ti-Nitride S.S. Coated Non-Stick Reciprocating Blades

If you think the Bubba electric knife is cool, and it definitely is, then you'll want to take a look at the Bubba Lithium-Ion Cordless knife. The convenient cordless design means filleting fish on-site, which is a huge plus for those off-the-grid fisherman.

We know what you’re thinking; cordless electric knives have no power, and the battery runs out in the middle of that fillet. Well, not the Bubba. These are lithium-ion batteries, and the knife comes with a battery life led indicator.

The dual rivet TiN (titanium nitride) stainless steel blades are incredibly durable, and you get a 7", two 9" and a massive 12" blade. They're super easy to remove and clean too.

The cordless Bubba comes with a fancy zippered storage case, making it a cool gift too.

Our rating:

5 / 5 Stars

Pros

  • "Nice assortment of blades"
  • Wireless
  • "Quiet, comfortable to hold and has a great case"
  • Versatile

Cons

  • Minimal complaints of dullness
  • Taking blades out of the powerhead is "cumbersome"

3) Proctor Silex Easy Slice Electric Knife

Now, this is a slick, stylish electric knife. It’s pearl-white and has a lovely, contoured grip. It sits comfortably in the palm of your hand, and that means precision.

This knife is perfect for meat, bread, ham and fish; you can even chop your veggies with it. The trigger is beautifully precise, this is serious accuracy, and you really don’t expect that from an appliance as nice-looking as the Proctor Silex.

There’s certainly a place in the kitchen for this pretty knife, but you’d be surprised to know it’s the weapon of choice for arts and crafts enthusiasts. People are cutting foam, cork and lots of other materials with it. If that isn’t versatility, we don’t know what is.

With all this said, if you are an avid fisherman who counts on using this knife to filet fish often, we recommend going with a different unit. It does come to a point at the end, but not a sharp point. This can make filleting a lot of fish an arduous task.

It comes without saying this is a lovely, affordable gift for someone looking for an electric blade.

Our rating:

4 / 5 Stars

Pros

  • "Filets fish nicely"
  • Versatile
  • Extremely low price

Cons

  • Overly large handle
  • Not great for cutting through fish bone
  • Should not be used for extensive fish fileting

The 8” Titanium-coated 420 stainless steel blade and its pro series shielded 40mm motor makes it a powerful tool, but also one of precision. Another remarkable feature of the American Angler Pro is that it doesn’t overheat. That’s thanks to the Santorini grip pad.

This is the knife you want to have on the boat, in your cabin and definitely in your kitchen.

The PRO label boasts four times the lifespan compared to other serrated electric knives, and even more if you alternate between the various blades.

This set comes with a protective blade, a zipped bag and a 2-year warranty. This is a professional tool, but don’t think for a second you won’t find it handy at home; you will.

Our rating:

Consider Before You Buy

How Many Blades?

More blades means more versatility. While it may seem like an insignificant variable right now, having the options down the line is usually the better alternative.

Find an electric filet knife that has several blade options to grant you cutting options for the unforeseeable future. We recommend at least two blade options.

Flexible blades will grant you more maneuverability, while thicker blades will grant you the necessary force to cut through thicker bones.

Cord or Cordless?

This is really the million dollar question. Let's break it down so you can make an educated decision.

Corded:

Pros: Don't have to worry about replacing the batteries down the line; Dependable

Cons: Have to be near an outlet.

Cordless:

Pros: Completely portable

Cons: Limited charge life (Time window usually shortens over time)

Takeaway: If you plan on being near an electrical outlet, it's usually a better option. If you like to filet fish on-site, a portable option will grant you the portability. There are good examples of both types of filet knives.

Sharpness (How to Evaluate)?

A sharp blade was our first variable in evaluating the star rating for each filet knife. Why?

Because a dull blade with a strong electric motor is like a race car with bald tires. The wheels might turn faster but the car isn't going anywhere.

Find a model with unanimously positive reviews regarding blade sharpness. We've included this in our pros and cons section of each model, but to prove it to yourself, type "sharp" or "dull" into the amazon "customers questions and answers" section. You'll find this at the bottom of each of Amazon's product pages (right above the review section). Filter the customer reviews and look to see how other people felt about the sharpness of the model in question.

Handle (How to Evaluate)?

There are two important variable to consider with the handle...

1) Ergonomic and comfortable design

2) Material for proper heat dissipation

We tried to include this in each summary as well, but again, if you need to prove it to yourself, type "comfortable", "uncomfortable", and "hot" into Amazon's question and answers section. You'll find this at the bottom of each of Amazon's product pages (right above the review section). Filter the customer reviews and look to see how other people felt about the sharpness of the model in question.

Every handle will eventually get hot with continued, uninterrupted use. So, the important variable is to find how quickly this happens.

Knife or Knife Kit?

Knife kits are fantastic for those who plan on taking advantage of the portability of these filet knives. If you plan on using these for camping or fishing, a kit will usually include a weather protective storage bag and some extra blades.

This is obviously unnecessary if you have your own storage for it. Just make sure you have a safe storage option for individual blades as well.

Concluding

All of these electric knives are extraordinary tools; you can’t go wrong with any of them but pick one that lines up with your needs.

Become the perfect host during the season’s dinner parties or slice through fish like you've never experienced before. You can’t imagine how versatile these powerful appliances are, but you’ll find out soon enough.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to leave a note below.

Cheers!
