Qualities to Consider

1) The Right Size

First and foremost, how much space are you willing to give up?

If you go with a larger, electric food slicer, you'll be able to slice bread quickly and evenly (granted you get the right one), but you'll be giving up a fair amount of space (check the dimensions in each product description). If you have the space, these food slicers are versatile and take the effort out of cutting just about anything.

Bigger Units

Faster Cutting, More Versatile but Expensive and Space Consuming.

If you go with a small, electric knife, you'll slice bread a little slower but you'll give up far less space in the kitchen. You'll also give yourself a handy knew carver for the annual Thanksgiving turkey carving.

Smaller Units

Slower Cutting (still faster than a manual knife), Less Versatile But Cheaper and Less Space Consuming.

2) The Right Bread

All of the bread slicers we've analyzed do better with either Sourdough/artisan breads, or white/ wheat/ homemade breads.  As surprising as it sounds, we haven't found an electric bread slicer that does well with both.

This will be clearly expressed in the pros and cons section of each model.

3) The Right Price

Prices range but don't get too outrageous. We've found most slicers to range between $30 and $120. Don't always equate price with quality. We found that the cheaper electric knives outlined actually had more positive bread slicing ratings than the other, more expensive models.

4) The Right Warranty

Warranty is an important variable to us. Find a product that has a worthwhile promise. If the guarantee is questionable (the amazon sellers are not the manufacturers), contact the company to make sure you're covered before you make a purchase. We chose our #1 product heavily because of the warranty promise.

Happy hunting:)

Summary:

Not all great meat slicers are great bread slicers. In fact, many of our highly reviewed meat slicers received poor bread-slicing responses from customers (although we didn't know it prior to this review).

We did a thorough search through Amazon and found that the Cusimax 7.5" blade meat slicer had the second best ratio of positive to negative bread slicing reviews.

Here's how we did it...

We typed the word "bread" into the amazon "have a question?" tab while on each meat slicer's Amazon page, and found that the cusimax had the second to highest ratio of positive customer responses regarding bread.

Why did we make the 2nd best reviewed our #1 pick?

The cusimax had better all-around reviews than the Superhandy model below. With the high chance of you using this slicer for other tasks than bread, we chose to steer you in the direction of something that will do most slicing tasks superbly.

This Cusimax also made it onto our best meat slicer review which we created a few months ago.

Here are some of the reasons it placed:

1) It has an 18 month warranty (Make sure and register the product)

2) It has countless reviews commenting on its low sound and sharp blade

3) It's capable of making true, deli thin slices of meat

Overall a fantastically reviewed piece of kitchen tech that we can proudly stand behind.  That said, we like to be upfront with you about the negative responses we received from customers. While proficient with regular bread, some people had difficulty slicing their homemade bread. This is likely due to textural differences. There were also a few customers who said the blade turned slower than other meat slicers they'd seen.

Just a few things to keep in mind.

2) Superhandy 6.7"Blade Bread/Food Slicer

  • Low Price
  • "Cuts my Fresh Baked Bread Perfectly"
  • "Doesn't Destroy the Bread as You Slice it"
  • Even Slices
  • "Like the Compactness, Very Space Saving"

Customer Responses

  • Not Great with Meat
  • Not Easy for Left Handers
  • Not Good For Longer Cut Times
  • Learning Curve to Using Appropriately

Summary:

Alright, let's answer the most prominent question about this superhandy model. How is this model any different than the Cusimax above?

Let's break it down.

The Superhand model is cheaper, has a higher positive customer response ratio regarding bread, and is fantastic with homemade bread. If you plan on primarily slicing bread, we can't recommend this unit enough.

If, however, you plan to slice anything else (meat especially), we encourage you to look elsewhere. This slicer CAN slice meat, it just doesn't do it very gracefully or evenly.

Homemade Bread = Yes

Meat and Vegetables = Not so much

A fantastic model if you know what you're slicing. Just make sure it has options you could potentially want down the road.

3) BLACK + DECKER 9" Electric Carving Knife

  • "This Knife Allows Me to Cut Bread Quickly and Easily Without Smooshing it"
  • "Great for Sandwich Bread Slicing"
  • "No More Uneven Slices of Bread"
  • Easy to Use and Clean
  • Incredible Price

Customer Responses

  • "Has a Problem with Artisan and Sourdough Bread"
  • Safety Button Makes Longer Cut Difficult
  • Customer Service Not Great
  • Not Clear on Knife blade Length

Summary:

Not all of us want those big bulky meat slicers taking up precious space in kitchen. If you're looking for a more inconspicuous way of expediting your bread slicing, we recommend looking into the right electric knife.

We were shocked to find such a cheaply priced knife receive such positive reviews. Approximately 80% of the bread slicing reviews were positive, leaving only 20% to complain about the knife's inability to cut artisan and sourdough breads.

Homemade/Wheat/White = Fantastic

Artisan/Sourdough = Not So Good

With over 3200 Amazon reviews, the Black+Decker electric knife has sustained a 4.4 / 5 star review (08/19/20) which is pretty phenomenal. People repeatedly talked about the ease of use, simple cleaning, and the fantastic price point.

There were a few common complaints about the hassle of the safety button. This is ultimately to help lessen the chance of accidents, but can get in the way with complex, or more time-consuming, cuts. People also said the customer service wasn't ideal.

Overall, people were very happy with the quality and price.

4) Homaider Electric Knife

Homaider Electric Knife
  • Cost: Average
  • Warranty: Year

  • “This knife is perfect for cutting freshly baked bread!”
  • “With my arthritis it’s so much easier to use my electric knife.”
  • “The handle is in a perfect position to use even if you have a small hand.”
  • “Makes cutting bread easy.”

Customer Responses

  • “I wish the item came with a case or some other storage functionality for the blades.”
  • “Was a bit difficult to install blades and knife slipped while carving.”
  • “Can’t tell which blade is for meat or bread.”
  • “Only drawback was cord is very short.”

Summary:

Handheld electric bread knives are often flimsy and noisy. Their lightweight handles tend to shake and heat up while in use.

The Homaider avoids these problems with a handle that sits above the motor housing, making it easier to hold and reducing vibration.

The grip is also shaped to fit your hand, and sports a dual-action trigger to make it less likely that you’ll activate it by mistake.

The tradeoff is that it’s larger than a typical handheld slicer. However, very few reviewers mentioned a problem with the weight or bulk. And all but one who discussed using it for bread said that it worked great.

However, you should be aware that this machine is newer than most of the others on our list and hasn’t had time to rack up as many reviews. At the time of this update, the Homaider only has 224 ratings and 54 reviews on Amazon (as of 04/27/2022).

There were a few mentions of the power cord being too short, but it appears that the manufacturer may have addressed this. According to the current product description, the cord has been lengthened to nearly 6 feet.

5) Anescra 200 Watt Electric Deli/Bread Slicer

Meat Slicer, Anescra 200W Electric Deli Food Slicer

  • Food Carriage Dimensions: 6.3" x 6.0"

  • Thickness control dial from paper-thin to 9/16” thick
  • Non-slip suction feet
  • Recessed power switch for safety
  • Detachable food carriage for cleaning and storage
  • Sturdy all-metal design
  • 200-W motor
  • Available in black or chrome colors
  • Grade 304 stainless steel blades

  • “This slicer cuts my homemade bread very well.”
  • “We bought this mainly for slicing home-made bread and it works well for that purpose.”
  • “It cuts fresh-made bread well.”
  • “The serrated blade cust through hard-crust bread with ease.”
  • "Great for the Holidays"
  • “I’m very impressed and pleased with its performance.”
  • “Consistent thin slices of bread.”
  • “What a time saver!”
  • “Customer service was amazing.”

Customer Responses

  • “The only thing I would change is the slide that holds the item to be cut, it’s too short and narrow for a whole loaf of bread.”
  • “It takes quite a bit of pressure to feed a crusty loaf into the blade.”
  • “Lacks a decent user’s guide.”
  • “The blade turns more slowly than I expected.”

Summary:

The Anescra Electric Food Slicer is a powerful, durable slicer. It’s not quite as fast as a commercial-grade deli machine, but it makes consistent, thin, even slices.

With more than 4000 ratings on Amazon, it’s earned 4.4 out of 5 stars (as of 04/27/2022).

Many reviewers mention its steady action, its stable suction-cup grip, and the ease of cleaning.

How does it handle bread? Quite well, based on customer feedback. It cuts cleanly through thick crusts, and there were very few complaints about tearing or variable thickness. Very wide, round loaves may not fit into the carriage, however.

Are there a few drawbacks? Sure. It won’t cut quite as thick as our #1 pick, with a maximum slice width of 0.6 inches. And you can’t use the machine for more than 5 minutes at once - it requires a cooldown period afterward. That’s a shorter operating time than the Cuisimax (though also a shorter rest period).

Overall, though, the Anescra is a sturdy and powerful workhorse.

Concluding

Most of us eat bread. It's a staple and delicious part of most of the world's diet. If you've found bread slicing to become a chore, we recommend investing in a quality electric bread slicer.

    1. Hey Chef,

I’m sorry to hear that our bread slicing article wasn’t helpful for you.

If you look at our synopsis of each electric bread slicer, you’ll see that we included details about the type of bread each unit is good for (based on customer responses). For example, the #1 Cusimax model, had conflicting reviews regarding homemade bread but had consistently good reviews regarding bread in general. Assuming the homemade-breads customers are referring to are tough crusted bread, a serrated blade would be the ideal option (to your point). However, there are a TON of positive reviews regarding this machine’s ability to cut bread and we can’t dismiss this.

There was also a customer who reached out to Cusimax and was able to get a serrated blade for his food slicer.

      Take care Chef,

      Michael
