3 Categories of Small, Which Are You?

1) Small but Tall

whirlpool-microwave

If vertical space isn't your issue, then going with a small but tall model gives you all the benefits of saving space without giving up too much cooking capacity.

There are only a few of these narrow microwaves available but they have some commendable reviews (#1).

2) Compact, Classic Style

black-and-decker-microwave

If you're just looking for a classic microwave that takes up a little less space, then this composes the majority of our list below. We've also included a few small retro examples worth considering (#2-#6).

3) Small, but on the Cusp of Medium

panasonic-microwave

If you're looking for a nice medium between the smaller varieties and the modern, bulkier models, we've included a few models below.

If you can manage it, these units usually have a higher wattage and more cooking options, but they aren't always necessary (#7).

Features to Consider

You won't find the long list of features you'll see on larger models, but there are some features worth considering.

Smaller convection microwaves do exist and we made a separate post to illustrate our favorites.

Power Levels

Yes, that setting on your microwave that you've probably never touched. Despite its seeming uselessness its actually a pretty convenient function. There is an ideal power level for all types of cook.

So, if you want more control over your cooks, and therefore better tasting meals, look for a microwave with at least 10 power levels.

Cooking Presets

If you find yourself repeatedly making the same meals, having cooking presets can make your life a little easier. Presets like "popcorn", "potato" and "pizza" are common examples of presets found in small microwaves.

With that said, these settings are not always perfect and can result in food that doesn't meet your standard. Just keep in mind that these settings attempt to be a one-size-fits-all solution to a very subjective matter.

We've included each microwave's cooking presets to the right of each image.

Add 30 Seconds Button

If you're a serial microwave user, the "add 30 seconds" button can be a real game-changer.

It's especially convenient for those who commonly reheat food.

Instead of pushing the 3 or 4 buttons to add 30 seconds, you push one button. Yes, a very lazy solution but one that you will thank me for later.

Turntable or No Turntable

Turntables rotate the food to help ensure even cooking. All microwaves below have a turntable.

With that said, turntables can limit what you can fit inside the microwave.

Large, rectangular items, for example, can hit the wall of the microwave when turning.

If you're interested in microwaves that were created to cooked evenly without a turntable, we've created a separate article to outline our favorites.
